Supply chain resilience depends partly on whether information reaches the people able to act on it. A manufacturing study published in a 2026 journal issue examines information integration and resilience. DHL’s Global Connectedness Report 2026 places those organisational decisions within a wider picture of resilient global connections and changing trade relationships.

The two sources work at different levels. Neither justifies assuming that more data, by itself, makes an individual business resilient.

Example one Information integration

Blokhuis, Bortolotti and Boscari studied 288 manufacturing organisations. Their findings associate information integration with resilience and identify a moderating role for internal IT integration in the customer-information relationship. That specific result should not be extended to claim the same moderation for supplier information.

The practical implication is to examine whether the organisation can use the information it receives. A forecast is more valuable when colleagues understand its assumptions, can compare it with other evidence and know who is authorised to respond. The study identifies relationships; it does not establish a guaranteed result from a particular software purchase.

Example two Changing trade connections

DHL and NYU Stern’s March 2026 report describes global connections holding firm alongside US–China decoupling. The announcement reports that their share of global trade fell from 2.7 per cent in 2024 to 2.0 per cent in the first three quarters of 2025. These are historical periods, not a full-year 2026 result.

For a business, an aggregate trade pattern is context rather than a supplier-specific forecast. Operational decisions still require current information about its own products, routes and dependencies.

Translate information into responsibility

A practical review could identify which signals matter, who checks them and what change would trigger action. It could also ask whether a critical supplier assessment depends on one colleague’s undocumented knowledge.

A hypothetical team receiving a delay notice might need purchasing, production and customer service to work from a shared interpretation. Recording the assumption and the decision owner can reduce the risk of each team acting on a different understanding. This is an illustrative recommendation, not a measured finding from either publication.

The management task is to connect information with interpretation and authority. A resilient process needs people who can explain what a signal means, assess alternatives and act within clear responsibilities when the situation changes.
