For this COM109 project at Murdoch University, I brought the semester’s creative work together in a short magazine designed in Adobe InDesign. The brief combined page layout with digital publication, asking us to present individual media pieces as a connected reading experience.

The project brief

The magazine was required to include a cover, content pages and an advertisement, alongside work produced during the semester. Audio and video were part of the brief, extending the publication beyond text and still images.

  • Organise the semester’s work into a coherent magazine.
  • Use layout and visual hierarchy to guide the reader.
  • Include the required advertising and multimedia content.
  • Prepare an interactive PDF for publication on Issuu.

Bringing the work together

The design challenge was to give different kinds of media a shared structure. A magazine needs a clear entry point, readable page layouts and a sensible progression between sections. Consistent typography and spacing help connect the pieces, while changes in scale and placement can draw attention to the most important content.

Digital delivery adds another consideration: a feature included in the design file should also be checked in the format and platform used by the reader. Adobe’s interactive PDF export guidance is a useful reference when testing an exported document.
